About
Laura

Based
in Evergreen, Colorado, Laura Mehmert paints, sculpts, and teaches
her artistic methods.
Laura
has been painting and teaching watercolor classes for more than
20 years. She studied at the University of Missouri in Kansas City,
as well as with several nationally acclaimed artists. She taught
art classes at the Bountiful/Davis Art Center in Bountiful, Utah
and displayed her art during faculty shows.
Laura
also displayed her work in the juried Loveland Sculpture Show, at
the Ramon Research Fund for the Morris Animal Foundation in Denver,
at the Hiwan Museum in Evergreen. In 2004, Laura's bronze sculpture
will be placed at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Anschutz-Fitzsimmons
campus.
Laura
continues a lifelong love affair with drawing and painting. "My
grandmother gave me a set of oil paints at age 8, and I've been
painting ever since," Laura says.
Another
of Laura's lifelong obsessions is the horse. She paints, draws,
sculpts, and occasionally has a chance to ride horses near her mountain
home. Horses are subjects in many of Laura's paintings.
Laura
began teaching art in her home studio to share her love of art,
animals, and wildlife. She has helped many students begin their
own art careers. Her strong feelings about her work are contagious.
"Painting
is a very personal expression of my perception of a particular moment.
The painting must have spirit and substance and engage the viewer,"
Laura says. I work in both oil and watercolor, and love each for
their unique qualities. I really don't favor one form over the other,
but throw myself into whatever medium fits the subject I'm trying
to portray--whether it's watercolor, oil, clay, or cloth. Art is
a way of life for me, and I have to keep at it for a sense of balance
in this fast-paced world. It is a never-ending source of joy to
me."
